They go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly! Although I think viral marketing can and has been proven to stand on it’s own two feet. SEO will not do the trick alone. They always work better together.

Spot on, the two must be used together. Viral marketing is great but your site still needs to be listed high in the search engines. I think social networking works hand in hand with a good SEM program.
