SEO Dictionary:

.htaccess

.htaccess is a directory-level configuration file used by Apache web servers and compatible hosting environments. It can control behavior such as redirects, URL rewriting, access rules, caching, compression, and custom error handling.

SEO and Marketing Terms: .htaccess

.htaccess is a directory-level configuration file used by the Apache HTTP Server and compatible hosting environments. The name comes from “hypertext access.” When Apache allows .htaccess overrides, rules placed in the file can change server behavior for the directory where the file lives and, in many cases, its subdirectories.

Website owners commonly encounter .htaccess when managing redirects, URL rewriting, access restrictions, custom error behavior, caching rules, compression, or other server settings. WordPress installations often use .htaccess for permalink rewriting when the site runs on Apache. SEO teams may also use it to implement 301 redirects during URL changes or migrations.

.htaccess is not available on every web server. Nginx, for example, uses a different configuration system. Even on Apache, a host can disable or limit which directives may be overridden with .htaccess. That is why instructions copied from one hosting environment may not work in another.

The file is powerful because the server processes its rules before delivering content, but that also makes mistakes risky. A malformed directive or redirect rule can create server errors, redirect loops, inaccessible pages, or sitewide outages. Before editing .htaccess, keep a backup, understand what the existing rules do, and have a way to restore the file if the site stops responding.

For SEO, .htaccess is a tool, not an optimization strategy. It can help implement technically correct redirects and URL behavior, but the correct approach depends on the server and the larger site architecture. Developers and hosting documentation should guide changes on production sites.
