SEO Dictionary:

Algorithm

An algorithm is a set of rules or calculations used to solve a problem or complete a task. In SEO, search engines use algorithms to understand searches, evaluate content, and decide which results to display.

SEO and Marketing Terms: Algorithm

When most people talk about “Google’s algorithm,” or “algo” for short, it’s like they picture one giant formula. You type in your search, Google runs “the algorithm,” and the results show up.

That’s a useful mental model, but it isn’t how modern search works. Instead, think of it more like this. You search, and Google’s systems:

  • define the query and what it means
  • find possible pages that match the query and the user’s intent
  • evaluate those results using many different signals
  • identify spam and other content that may violate Google’s policies
  • rank the results based on what appears most relevant and useful
  • determine how those results should appear on the search page

In reality, search involves several steps, and those steps rely on different automated systems, calculations, and signals.

Before Google even looks at a website, it has to figure out what you mean. For example, if you search apple, are you talking about the company, the fruit, Apple Music, or something else? Search systems use clues such as the other words in the query, language, location, settings, and broader search patterns to better understand the request.

Once it “knows” what you mean, Google searches its index and says, for example, “Here are 200,000 pages that might answer this question.” Those become the candidates that are evaluated by the multiple ranking systems, with varying weights, signals, and calculations, depending on the query.

Google has intentionally stepped away from talking about “the algorithm” and now describes Search in terms of multiple automated systems working together. Because of this, it’s more accurate to think of search as an ecosystem than as a single formula.
